NEW SOCIOPOLITICAL SCENARIOS RELATED TO ANIMAL WELFARE.
Trabajo presentado en IFAMA (International Food and Agribusiness Management Association, www.ifama.org) en la XXVI Conferencia Anual 2017 World Forum and Symposium. Autores: Begaglio, JP.; Palau, H. Miami, EEUU. Junio de 2017.
Animal
welfare (AW) is currently appreciated and demanded in the world, since it is
considered by consumers as a tool to guarantee the quality and healthiness of
food of animal origin. This condition changed both institutional and
organizational environments, impacting in how the distribution companies manage
their transactions with suppliers. The main objective of the following paper is
to describe and analyze the different forms of adaptation of the main American
and European companies of fast food and supermarkets chains to ensure high
standards of AW in their products.
The work focused on the analysis of
information originated from interviews with experts (primary sources) and
bibliographic review (secondary sources), based on the theoretical framework of
discrete structural analysis (DSA) focusing specifically on the analysis of the
institutional and technological environment. The present paper noted that,
based on the consumer demands and concerns regarding AW, both government and
private sector took institutional and technological measures to ensure
fulfillment of these requirements.
The institutional environment leaded the
companies, to adopt technological innovations, through processes, protocols and
traceability, not only regarding the animal itself but also at the level of
transport, slaughter and other aspects related to the animal life. The system
establishes contractual criteria for a normal and efficient supply of beef with
these standards. Vertical coordination models are created through the
management of contracts, collective working groups, shared information, aimed
at reducing the level of uncertainty and improving the coordination of the
chain as a whole.
